SanDisk and Toshiba joined hands together to produce the long awaited 3 dimensional re-writable memory chips.
Apparently SanDisk has filed for the license for cross development and production of the chip though the 3D memory chip was first "discovered" by a company called Matrix who knew how to stack memory arrays vertically and not just horizontally, from 2001. This discovery led to lowering costs and boosting the amount of memory stored on a single chip.
However, the project never took off and the company was taken over by SanDisk and with its own technology was able to produce only non-rewritable memory. They're now collaborating with Toshiba to provide technology to produce re-writable chips.
