A press release from Verbatim Americas LLC just announced today that the company will start to ship the world's first 2x HD DVD-R (recordable) and HD DVD-RW (rewriteable) discs in the first quarter of 2008. It took them some time to get from 1x from late 2006, to 2x, and though the price will not be low I am sure the upgrade was very much expected by those using HD DVD discs. News also say that the upgrade includes 30GB discs now.
