Nanophotonic Supercomputer by IBM

A super computer that is the size of a laptop sounds like a very good idea and IBM may have the solution with their silicon nanophotonic technology. Apparently they won't use any wires in the future chipsets but light pulses instead, that will travel through optical fibers. Of course it is going to be much faster (light speed) with experts looking at 100x faster, and much more energy efficient, 10 times less.

The main disadvantage of the wired chipsets on the market right now is related to overheating and the fact that the data signals only travel a few millimeters from one core to another while silicon photonics can reach many centimeters and a low power consumption.

Though this sounds great, don't get your hopes too high, yet, because the project is not going to be ready any time soon. Will Green, research scientist at IBM said that they are seeing 10-12 years of research before going live with it.

electricity travels at the speed of light. so there is no guarantee it will be faster due to using light.

eletricity doesn't travel at the speed of light. This is a quote from coolnews.org
"Electrons, which have mass, can never travel at the speed of light due to the theory of relativity. The drift velocity of the charges in an electric current is extremely slow, on the order of centimetres per hour. Where the electric current is visible, as in electrophoresis, the slow movement of charge carriers can be seen directly.

As a very rough analogy, imagine a line of people at an amusement park. When the people at the front board the ride, a space opens up, and rapidly spreads to the back of the line. However, the average velocity of any one person is far slower than the speed at which the space moves."

On a more related note, this will be a huge advancement in technology and hopefully will one day trickle down to the consumer. power usage and temperatures are what keep chip manufacturers at bay for right now

This sounds fantastic. It's a shame about the time frame, though. Call me a sceptic, but making any predictions on computer technology 10-12 years into the future seems like an extremely challenging task.

And to the first poster, I have a quite simple rule of thumb for you: *Nothing* travels at the speed of light, except light itself - and all other types of electromagnetic radiation.
Maybe the term ELECTROmagnetic is what's confusing you.
