Google Said That World's Content Will Fit Inside an iPod by 2020

 world-in-ipod.jpg

Google had an interesting presentation this year at the Captains of Industry Conference by BP Sukhinder Singh Cassidy that wanted to make us aware how technology evolved so far because storage capacities increased. We already knew that and also knew the fact that a lot of content, and I really mean a lot, is being produced daily, but here comes the interesting part, because the lady said

"if this trend continues, and the cost of storage continues to decrease, we estimate that somewhere around 2020, all the world's content will fit inside an iPod, and all the world's music would sit in your palm as early as 2015 ... rendering the CD format unnecessary. "

Miss Sukhinder we're with you (and Google) on that one but don't you think 2020 is a little short? There are only 13 years left and probably not enough time.

There are a few things I could see changing in 13 years and that include website hosting, email services and so on. Would these all become unlimited by then or we will continue to create special files, like HD movies, that would take a lot of space?

What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure they mean all the current world content, As the ratio will always change over time. Say the world has a few petabytes. I think what they are trying to say, is that by 2020 there will be a 10Petabyte ipod.

if you dont think data storage or technology will be that much different check this out.

But, how do you define the world's information? As far as I know, as storage capacities increase, the availability of things to store will increase as well, likely in proportion to the storage capacity. 2020 may very well be a year where video games model atomic structures of buildings in real time. Surely the amount of info will keep being as unreachable as it is today.
