I've said it every time I had the chance to do it that Google will not enter the cellphones market by manufacturing a new device. If you were to choose from having a small percentage of the market with one phone or having your software on half of those, what would you choose?
Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) took a very good decission here and made the official announcement today. It's no Gphone, G-phone, Google phone or any other name you may want to call it, because it's an Android. Yes you've heard me right Google's newest Linux-based open source software for mobile phones is called Android.
I agree these guys were not very inspired when they named it that way but it looks like four big manufacturers, Motorola, Samsung, LG and HTC didn't have any complaints and will work on this new platform sooner than we thought. It's rumored that HTC will the first to launch, in the second half of 2008 and the name could be HTC "Dream". If you're curious if any carriers will use Android mobile phones on their networks then you should know that Sprint, T-Mobile, Mobile China or Telefonica in Spain already agreed to it.
If you would be interested to know the first few thoughts of what Google's Android will feature then here they are:
- Linux based OS
- core applications and third party applications are treated with the same access levels
- can be used to gather important data such as a contacts list, calendar appointments and such with your mobile phone
- developers will be happy to know the system offers the location of the device and peer-to-peer connections with others
Lots of buzz should cover this whole G OS system because it's something new and opens the doors wide to the new. We just have to see what happens because it looks like Google will dominate everything on the Internet, soon.
