We all know YouTube, the Googe deal when they bought it and the fact that in just a few years it became a giant video content website, so I guess trying to improve the service is not something anyone should be surprised with. Co-founder Steve Chen announced yesterday at the NewTeeVee conference that they are working to offer HD videos with the product being in tests so far.
Chen said that the biggest problem of HD video would be buffering. If it takes 10 minutes to view a 2 minutes video because every 10 seconds it stops to load then the viewer would quit. They are working on the technology that would allow it and a data frame is three months from now.
HD videos viewing requires a lot of bandwidth and if such a product is implemented and not optimized there will be many that wouldn't be able to access it. Many YouTube competitors are also working on that service so the battle is just begining.
