Have you ever seen any LED candles? They are made of solid wax on the outside and use electronic LEDs on the inside so that they look exactly like the normal candles (they fooled me) we've been used with. I am sure they'd look great in your livingroom and if you add the fact that you can have them lighten up your room for the whole night, with no fire risk attached then I guess you have a pretty neat alternative.
The LED candles come in 4-inch and 6-inch versions, with yellowish flavor and can be turned blue if you press just small button. Using electronic parts instead of real fire you won't have to worry about melted wax on your carpet and you get the chance to trick your friends that these are real? The 4-inch version works on button type batteries and the price is $12, while the 6-inch LED candles have four AAA batteries and a price of $15.
