It happened to me twice this year, first time with my laptop and then with my new iPod. I was in a hurry and I had to snap the cable out, so imagine how my audio jack looks right now. Broken, of course. For those that experienced it, there is hope because of a genius invention by Replug, called a magnetic connector, that works just like the small magnets on the newer Macs, which break out when pressure is applied.
The Replug Breakaway Cable is compatible with any 3.5mm jacks and will be available by the end of the year for a cheap price.
We live in the world of wireless headphones, so I'm not sure who will use it in five years. The good thing, however, is that the technology could be developed further to other types of cables.
