Not sure if you are familiar with the plans to create a 12,428 miles underwater cable to connect America and SouthEastern Asia by seven big telecom companies in an attempt to offer higher bandwidth connections from December 2008.
Apparently that's not the only plan for something like that. Google is planning to to implement under sea communication cable in the Pacific Ocean available for launch in 2009. The cable also has a name, "Unity", and has been silently under developement for the last seven months with large worldwide carriers. Meetings in Sydney last week however didn't make the 'rumor' tangibile, but I think it's true. They need it to expand so they'll get it done.
