Lots of institutes try to break world records on wireless connections. It's the Italians that did it this time, for the 5GHz WiFi, and they managed to connect Sardinia Island and the Italian mainland at transfer rates up to 5MBps. They used technology provided by Ubiquiti Networks, a company very much involved in outdoor broadband wireless networking.
The connection was established using an XtremeRange5 (XR5) High-Power Carrier Class mini-PCI radio module and some parabolic dish antennas. That sounds like we're on track with changing to WiFi all our internet connections. The world record for the 5GHz WiFi connection is now in the portfolio of the Italian Center for Radio Activities (C.I.S.A.R), a non-profit organization.
