Two Japanese hard disk manufacturers, Nec and Hitachi, teamed up on a joint effort to create the water cooled hard drives. The technology developed is pretty smart and it's not only cooling the hard drives better, but will also reduce the noise to 25 decibels.
The system uses a cooling cold plate surrounding the hard drive, the most efficient for heat conduction, which will cool down faster and much more efficient (less power). Related to the noise reduction, Nec and Hitachi mentioned that they are using noise-absorbing material to wrap it up and a low-speed fan to move the air.
PCs with water cooled hard drives will roll out in Japan soon and will include an additional price of $170 (¥20,000) than standard models.
