You're not a photographer. You're the guy that makes the decisions as to what equipment to buy for your staff photographer. So you better be armed and prepared with this information to keep you in the know as to what lenses to get.
Lenses aren't cheap. Really good ones like the L lenses of Canon can rank up to the $1,500.00 to $4,000.00 range. Arm yourself with the knowledge of what your publication of nature of business will primarily be shooting and take it from there. Journalism and travel guides would want to get wide lenses while food photographers can go for prime or zoom lenses. Of course this is not a rule of thumb as creativity can always be a factor in determining what gear you should get.
