There's an interesting article over at PC Magazine that talks about how WiFi will pave the way for WiMax - something which most of us already know. But this spells the death of WiFi, according to the article.
Settles, who specializes in analyzing municipal broadband, said some cities, such as Grand Rapids, Ill., have even skipped Wi-Fi and deployed WiMAX-only deployments. That's important, he said, as users become used to interacting with WiMAX and not in using it as a behind-the-scenes backhaul technology. (source)
I honestly feel that this a generalized statement because in places like the Philippines, WiFi is in full throttle across the central business districts.

That'd be Grand Rapids, MI. The deployment itself is due to take place in a few months -- the only concrete news so far is that they have made the decision to go with WiMax, and we've yet to see if it happens within the timeframe they discuss or what it does to WiFi usage in the city (which is already pretty high, with around 100 locations offering free access)
