In our office we belong to a lean publishing company where it makes sense to have a staff photographer for our 6 commercial publications rather than always outsource the talent. Well yes, we do that, but only for certain treatments such as glamor shots and out of town trips.

We have one staff photographer who is basically a jack of all trades but he often gets burned out due to the demands of all six of our mags, from food photography, to getting stuck out in the golf course for the whole day, to getting stuck in the office for product shots.
It's quite hard to manage the time of one staff photographer. One suggestion was to get two and divide their time between lifestyle and technology publications since both can take up a whole lot of time, and the discipline of shooting products may differ from shooting lifestyle shots (in the beginning, our product shots were blurred on the edges because our photog came from a "lifestyle" approach to make things look more dramatic.).
