Carry three types of cables with you. The first is the new standard printer cable that also fits other gadgets like a podcasting microphone. You never know when you could use that for an interview.

The second cable is the USB extension cable which is very useful for computers that have USB ports that are bunched close together. For instance, plugging in an iPod shuffle automatically negates two USB ports because of the sheer perimiter the device occupies.

The third type is the USB hub and card reader. You never know when you will need to move data to and from devices such as a digital camera using SD/MMC, Memory Stick or a DSLR using a CF card. Having a card reader in your bag - you won't even feel it but it could save you a lot of hassle.
