Yes, something is being done. After recent events of the biggest federal product recall in history, Apple and Dell are meeting to
discuss safety standards for lithium ion batteries this September 13 2006.
It's about time something like this happened. It took six million potential bombs to call the deal. It also looks like good news for other products to be standardized, which may spell some good beans to look forward to in the future.
"Without a doubt, standardization can and will address the issue of operation and safety called into question by the use of lithium ion batteries," Grosso said in a statement issued by the organization. "While the committee had identified lithium ion batteries as the next product for standardization, we are going to accelerate our activities now."

Thanks drawing attention to the fact that we cant just stop at a recall. With the primary goal of insuring a safe and reliable battery delivered each and every time to our customers, Dell and others are working with IPC, an industry organization that establishes standards for various products. The plan is for an October summit that brings together users of lithium-ion batteries to establish manufacturing standards. In addition to Dell, Apple, Cisco,HP, IBM, Lenovo, Lucent, and Motorola have been involved with IPC to establish industry standards. The organization
has become a global standards entity with over 100 active standards and 100 volunteer committees, subcommittees and working groups. It has a solid track record of bringing standards to industry. our blog direct2dell.com has additional information
