Further proof that AMD products are carving out their own niche, and maybe even crowding into Intel's a bit, IBM has announced its new run of servers will have AMD chips in them. The AMD Opteron chips are AMD's high-end server processors. Whether or not AMD will over take the juggernaut that is Intel, especially with Intel's
duo-core processors being put in all the new G5s out there, it's hard to tell. But considering that Big Blue is trying to circle its wagons in the server market anyway, this may not be a bad pairing at all. Ironically HP is making the same kind of dents in IBM's server market that AMD made in Intel's processor market. Ultimately, the idea of IBM ever fading away is pretty silly, so AMD may be the clearest winner in this latest news.
