
Microsoft will stop providing support to Windows 98 from today, and is encouraging all users to upgrade to Windows XP. This comes after a 3 year extension where Microsoft was originally supposed to discontinue support in 2003.
There is an estimated 70 million users out there who are still using the affected software, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows Me, all of which are now dangerously vulnerable to new exploits and loopholes now that there will be no more security upgrades to those operating systems.
Companies who have yet to switch cite key issues with upgrades including the hardware required, where the minimum system requirements for running Windows XP are much more powerful that Windows 98.
