Samsung has claimed first dibs on developing the industry's fastest graphics memory in the form of a 256Mbit chip that runs at an amazing 2.5Gbit per second. This 4th generation GDDR memory is capable of performing 56% faster than current GDDR3 memory, pumping out gaming and video images at 10Gb/s. When measured against GDDR3 at speeds of 2Gb/s, GDDR4 managed to obtain a 45% in power savings. Since the GDDR4 memory chip retains a virtually identical design to that of GDDR3, most graphics chip manufacturers would lean toward GDDR4 over Rambus' XDR technology since it requires a shorter development time that ultimately translates to lower costs and higher profits. Mass production of the GDDR4 memory is expected to commence by the second quarter of 2006.
Pros : Faster memory, lower power consumption
Cons : More heat generated, expensive
