Barely a few months from the dual core chip of Intel comes the Core 2 duo. CNET has taken the practical approach and reviewed the chip on three machines - a Dell XPS, a Fal;con Northwest and the Velocity for the kiddies.

As you would expect, all machines got good ratings because of speed and the zen of quiet computing.

Question is, is it time to upgrade your fleet of machines to the Core 2 after July 27? My short answer is no, unless you have no computer at all (then how are you reading this article, pray tell?)

My long answer would be to weigh it out and wait for your machine (desktop or laptop) to ship with Windows Vista once it comes out next year. That way, you take advantage of the Christmas price drop and the bundled OS.

Update: ExtremeTech has also reviewed the Core 2 and has given the verdict of "yes, believe the hype!"
