Apple unveils $899 education iMac

Apple has introduced a new 17" iMac that targets customers in the education sector with a brand new configuration, offering unprecedented power at such a low price. The new iMac is powered by an Intel 1.83 GHz Core Duo processor and comes with a built-in iSight video camera and the iLife '06 digital lifestyle application suite. The iMac will take over the defunct eMac's position in the market, and offers an ideal desk space saving design with its 17" widescreen LCD display. Other features include a combo DVD/CD drive, 512MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory (maximum 2GB) and a 160GB hard drive. Connectivity options include WiFi, built-in Gigabit Ethernet, five USB 2.0 ports and a couple of FireWire 400 ports. The new iMac will ship with the latest Mac OS X version and will include Safari, Mail, iCal, iChat AV, Front Row and Photo Booth - programs that run natively on the Intel-based desktop.
