The VoIP concept has really taken off due to the unprecedented success of Skype. Vonage is offering a new WiFi phone in the form of the UTStarcom F1000B WiFi handset that provides low cost calls within the confines of a home VoIP service. The Vonage WiFi phone still works better when used as a fixed, cordless phone in the office or at your residence, but it could also be used all over the place provided the WiFi blanket is large enough to provide the necessary coverage. Setting up the Vonage WiFi phone is painless, all you need to do is to search through a list of networks and hook up to our own, type the WEP key, and you're good to go. Voice quality is above par and even though there is a wee bit of lag occasionally, the Vonage WiFi phone offers a performance that is very much like a normal phone call. Unfortunately, such new technology means there are still quite a number of bugs to be ironed out. Calling landlines could result in dropped numbers and the occasional hiss of static. Being a portable WiFi device, the drain on the batteries could work against it. An entire day of usage will result in the phone being returned to its charging cradle.
Pros : Free calls, web browser interface
Cons : Poor battery life
