Currently the most popular flash memory standard in the world, the SD card format will receive a refresh by the time the third quarter of 2006 rolls around. SD 2.0 will make 32GB cards a reality, formatted in FAT32. Unfortunately, SD 2.0 cards that are 4GB and above in capacity will not be compatible with current SD 1.0/1.1 standards. A new naming convention will be introduced, with 4GB and above SD cards to be called SDHC (SD High Capacity). Transfer rates are painfully slow at 6MB/s, although time will see this weak point improve. Prices begin from £150 for the 4GB version. Consumers seem to be getting the short end of the stick with this forced evolution viewpoint being imposed on them. Darn, I hate to buy stuff that dies out so fast. I already have ton of 32MB,64MB and 128MB thumbdrives in my storeroom.
