Pioneer has released the BDR-101A Blu-ray recorder for the PC platform, making this the first on the market. This 2x Blu-ray recorder boasts a theoretical burn data rate of 9MB/s which is actually 6.66 times faster than that of a standard DVD. It is connected via a parallel ATA interface. Unfortunately, that's about all it can do as it can neither burn nor read other types of CD/DVD media. This is probably due to the fact that Pioneer wants to reduce the price by including only a single Blu-ray laser head. The BDR-101A's other shortcoming is the ability to only burn single layer BDE discs.
A single-layer Blu-ray disc (BD) has enough storage capacity (25GB) for approximately two hours of high-definition video with audio. A dual-layer (50GB) BD can hold enough data for approximately four hours of HD video.
