Microsoft has disclosed more information regarding its Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool. Not only does this anti-piracy tool evaluate whether the installed Windows is a legitimate copy, it also performs a daily check in with Microsoft. Such information has caused alarm, linking this move by Redmond's software giant as a spy ware tactic and very Big Brother-like. Needless to say, Microsoft has pooh-poohed such a notion and claims that this regular call home is maintained for necessary maintenance purposes and does not infringe on any privacy rights whatsoever. Even though no confidential data is passed on to Microsoft during the check-in, they do receive a record of the IP address and timestamp. Looks like Microsoft is beating around the bush again and not being totally honest with the consumers.
