Having more than one monitor would look cool. I admit that when I saw movies that showed villains or heroes having to work on a computer with multiple monitors, I wanted to have one at home and at the office. But, is it just cool and trendy to make you look techno savvy?
It actually helps you to be more efficient and very productive. Before I received my laptop, I had a desktop to work on. But, when our IT guru told me that my HP notebook can be a second monitor, I took interest and tried it. Since then, it was history. I used my desktop to check my email while I worked on documents in Microsoft Word or Excel on my laptop. My USB drive is then hooked up so I could save it easily as I prepare for my next meeting.
Here are other examples and reasons you can tell your boss when you request for that additional monitor:
Training and Presentations
My trainers had to keep up with the numerous updates through email and had to make sure that everything is trained before they take calls. So, instead of having 2 computers, we hooked up one monitor to the projector while they facilitate and another to download emails and do administrative work.
Call Centers
An agent is able to open the knowledge base on one and the other opens the customer’s file. This helps their handle time while one loads the information needed, an agent is typing away to look for options and communicate the solution.
Graphic & Web Design
I have a friend who draws and uses vector graphics to make his comics. In addition to this, he works on his website. By having the template on one monitor, he can refer to it ever so often if his graphic fits the design.
There are other uses for multiple monitors and I suggest you don’t stop at two but more if you need to meet a deadline.
